How big is Amazon really?
According to recent industry figures, Amazon is the leading e-retailer in the United States with close to 386 billion U.S. dollars in 2020 net sales. Most of the company's revenue is generated through e-retail sales of electronics and other products, followed by third-party seller revenues, subscription services and AWS activities.
Due to Amazon’s global scope and reach, it is also considered one of the most valuable brands worldwide.
Big ripple effects from a small market share are what we are seeing from Amazon. It has had a profound influence on people’s behavior, the strategies of entire industries, and our communities.
Even during the pandemic, only about $14 out of each $100 worth of retail stuff we buy is spent online; and from this $14 spent, Amazon is responsible for roughly $5 of that.
Amazon uses this figure to counter critics who say the company is too big and powerful; but government investigations are looking at the behavior of Big Tech, not just their size.
So, is Amazon big? Yes, and also no. And the reality is that no matter what the numbers say, Amazon commands the attention of people, other companies, and governments because it’s influential in reshaping the world.
